How would you engage and include parents, caregivers, community members and students in decision-making in your district around things like curriculum, budgeting and district policy?
Listen to all stakeholders. When we listen and engage with those that are invovled within the district, we can create policy to drive change toward the districts goals. The best idea wins, it should not matter where that idea comes from.
What are your thoughts on school discipline and the way it is exercised in your school district? What are your thoughts on restorative practices?
School discipline has often followed a punitive model, where students face consequences such as detention, suspension, or expulsion for rule violations. These methods are based on the idea of punishment serving as a deterrent for negative behavior.
This model can disproportionately affect marginalized groups of students, especially minorities and those of a lower socioeconomic status.
We have to give tools for students to learn and grow into responsible productive members of society. As a district we have to create policy that acheives this goal for all students. We must make a concerted effort to hold a open dialogue with students and hold them accountable. Allow for opportunities to repair any harm, and share a community focus.
We have to shift the culture to achieve these educational goals.
What are your thoughts on how to improve student mental health
We must create an environment that increases access to mental healt resources, embed mental health education into the curriculum, foster a positive school culture, create peer support systems, address socioeconomic factors, and provide early identification and intervention.
What are your thoughts on ways to improve Black student achievement in your district and in Michigan schools overall?
Support and provide an environment that is inclusive to the needs of all students. An inclusive environment is one that will help students understand different perspectives. Help direct the district administration in a direction that addresses the needs of different populations of the district.
What are your thoughts on how to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion, income status, etc., feel safe and included in your district?
Communication and inclusivity. As a district it is our responsibility to undersand the needs of all students. Help foster and create an environment that students can be themselves, while learning that our differences make us stronger as a community. A district board needs to know the people the board serves, and create strong educational policy to encourage and foster this inclusivity.
What are your thoughts on how to recruit and retain staff, particularly staff of color, in your district with regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions?
Recruiting and retaining staff, particularly staff of color, is a critical issue for school districts aiming to create a more diverse and inclusive workforce that reflects the student population. Diverse staff members bring different perspectives and experiences, which can enhance student outcomes, improve school culture, and support equity in education.
As a district we must provide competitive pay, comprehensive benefits, maintain a supportive and inclusive working environment, create policy to ensure a climate and culture of inclusivity, and develop a pipepline for recruiting staff of color by creating programs to support the recruitment of people of color to the district.
