How would you engage and include parents, caregivers, community members and students in decision-making in your district around things like curriculum, budgeting and district policy?
By assuring there is representation of these groups when decisions are being made
What are your thoughts on school discipline and the way it is exercised in your school district? What are your thoughts on restorative practices?
I am conserned about the school to prison pipeline issues regarding decipline. Restorative practices, when used appropriately, are the best means of taking resposibilty and as a teachable moment of self monitoring conflict resoluton.
What are your thoughts on how to improve student mental health
Making social/emotional learning a part of the overall learning and having mental health providers in fulltime postions in each building.
What are your thoughts on ways to improve Black student achievement in your district and in Michigan schools overall?
Putting in place intervention to assist in individual student's needs for success to occur. Examine how we discipline and certify students with IEPs. Because you're black doesn't mean you're special education. I believe in the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support.
What are your thoughts on how to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion, income status, etc., feel safe and included in your district?
Creating the environment through actions, adult modeling, and not just words. It has to be practiced throughout an entire school community. Also, be aware of how gun violence is an issue in all communities and how feeling safe impacts learning.
What are your thoughts on how to recruit and retain staff, particularly staff of color, in your district with regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions?
Ultimately, pay and benefits are the priorties, educators are professionals and deserve to be treated that way. It is important for students of color to see staff of color. It creates the environment to assure the culture/climate of the previous question.
