Tammy Niemier- Edwardsburg School Board

How would you engage and include parents, caregivers, community members and students in decision-making in your district around things like curriculum, budgeting and district policy?

Focus groups/advisory groups

What are your thoughts on school discipline and the way it is exercised in your school district? What are your thoughts on restorative practices?

I feel that in many cases, the hands of our teachers and administrators are tied. We follow state policies and procedures, but also see cases where we can improve the handbook policies to have clearer guidelines so students and parents understand the rules and consequences associated with our code of conduct.

What are your thoughts on how to improve student mental health

We continue to add resources to this area and emphasize a partnership between the school and parents to help students with mental health issues, to thrive and succeed.

What are your thoughts on ways to improve Black student achievement in your district and in Michigan schools overall?

We have a very small percentage of black students given our farm town as well as neighboring districts who have more diversity. The ones who attend our schools, tend to be class leaders across all facets.

What are your thoughts on how to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion, income status, etc., feel safe and included in your district?

This is a tough question because a lot of the behavior starts at home. We have implemented a new 5 star program which focuses on character building and kindness. We also have an okay 2say program that gives students the ability to report issues without being called out.

What are your thoughts on how to recruit and retain staff, particularly staff of color, in your district with regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions?

Our belief is to hire the best candidate for the job, regardless of the color of their skin. We secured a 3 year fair contract with our teachers this year and it is for ALL teachers. We promote best in class work environment and support any way we can at a board level.
