Malewitz, Michelle - Tecumseh Public Schools
Are you an incumbent?

Brief Intro of Candidate
I am currently a Director at an international media company and a parent of a fifth grader at TPS. With a background rooted in a family of educators, I am a strong advocate for supporting teachers. Professionally, I manage cross-functional teams and oversee substantial budgets. My husband and I relocated to Tecumseh two years ago specifically for the school district. Our son has thrived at Herrick Park, and we are enthusiastic about his future at TMS. Since our move, we have been actively involved in the community through Kiwanis, Covenant Cove Church, and various school volunteer activities.

How would you engage and include parents, caregivers, community members and students in decision-making in your district around things like curriculum, budgeting and district policy?
I am a firm believer in Parent/Teacher Advisory Committee's. I have served on several myself and found them a great way to work with others towards the needs and goals of the district. It is important to also include students in some of these committee's as they need to have a voice in their education. I am currently the TPS Rep on the LISD Special Education PAC.
What are your thoughts on school discipline and the way it is exercised in your school district? What are your thoughts on restorative practices?
I think that our current policies should be reviewed by a PAC and recommendations should then be submitted before the school board. We currently have an issue with bullying and the current policy is not clear which makes it difficult to enforce in any meaningful way. Restorative practices when done correctly can help the entire school community more forward in a positive way.
What are your thoughts on how to improve student mental health
I would like to see more dialogue between schools, students, parents and guardians. Educating parents and guardians about mental health and providing them with resources to support their children. Open communication between home and school can reinforce positive mental health practices.
What are your thoughts on ways to improve Black student achievement in your district and in Michigan schools overall?
Michigan needs increased funding for schools. Ensuring that schools in predominantly Black and underserved communities receive adequate funding is key. This includes resources for high-quality teachers, updated materials, and extracurricular programs that support academic growth.
What are your thoughts on how to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion, income status, etc., feel safe and included in your district?
I would focus on building strong relationships with families and community organizations to ensure that they feel welcome and heard. Hosting regular community meetings in various formats so that they are accessible to all. This would include in person, small group and live streamed. It's important to offer these at times are flexible for working families.
What are your thoughts on how to recruit and retain staff, particularly staff of color, in your district with regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions?
Schools need to offer the complete package: competitive, salaries, comprehensive benefits that can be tailored to individual needs, professional development along with mentorship and support. We must also maintain a work-life balance. Staff need to feel respected and valued for their contributions to our schools and community.
