How would you engage and include parents, caregivers, community members and students in decision-making in your district around things like curriculum, budgeting and district policy?
I would invite all interested parties to voice their concerns to the Board during our meetings. I wouls also encourage them to reach out to the Board members about any and all concerns they may have. This would give us time to address their concerns more quickly and offer a desired resolution.
What are your thoughts on school discipline and the way it is exercised in your school district? What are your thoughts on restorative practices?
I feel that in some cases discipline is issued before all the facts have been gathered. I aslo feel that in some cases disciplinary actions have been withheld due to the popularity of the individual, or the influence a parent has in the community.
What are your thoughts on how to improve student mental health
All students need to know that they welcomed within the school district. They need to know that the schools have resources that are readily available for them, as well as thier assigned Counseling Team. I would encourage the School Administration Teams to heavily enforce the Districts "Zero Tolerance" policies when it comes to bulllying and discrimination. No student should ever have to feel like they are alone.
What are your thoughts on ways to improve Black student achievement in your district and in Michigan schools overall?
They should be reminded that they are capable of achieving their educational goals, and they have access to all of the tools that their fellow classmates have. Like all other students, they should be consistently encouraged to follow their dreams and to never lose focus or forget them.
What are your thoughts on how to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion, income status, etc., feel safe and included in your district?
I would remind them that their Board is there for them. I will make it my mission to alway be available to hear their concerns and address them in a timely manner. I would encourage them to also reach out to the other Board members, as well as the School Administrators to ensure that noboday can claim ignorance regarding such issues. I would also encourage the Board to conduct periodic audits of the schools to ensure that all matters are handled with care and sensitivity.
What are your thoughts on how to recruit and retain staff, particularly staff of color, in your district with regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions?
I would make sure that their pay is a reflection of their experience in the field. I would opt to be part of the collective bargaining team to make sure that all eligible employees receive the proper benefit packages, pay grades and retirement plans. I would also conduct periodic checks to ensure that all schools in the district are up to date with all OSHA standards and regulations.
