Brief Intro of Candidate

As the Deputy Director Youth Experience at Wayne County, I oversee the operations and programs of the juvenile center, ensuring the safety, well-being, and development of the youth in our care. How would you engage and include parents, caregivers, community members and students in decision-making in your district around things like curriculum, budgeting and district policy?

I would work to create advisory committees consisting of parents, caregivers, community members, and students to participate in regular meetings where curriculum, budgeting, and district policy decisions are discussed. Implementing town hall meetings and online surveys can also provide a platform for broader community input. An example is the Ann Arbor Public Schools' "Parent and Community Engagement" initiative, which includes diverse stakeholder groups in decision-making processes.

What are your thoughts on school discipline and the way it is exercised in your school district? What are your thoughts on restorative practices?

What are your thoughts on how to improve student mental health

I would advocate for increased funding for mental health resources through partnerships with local health organizations and seeking grants. Integrating social-emotional learning (SEL) programs into the curriculum and providing regular training for staff on mental health awareness can help create a supportive environment for students.

What are your thoughts on ways to improve Black student achievement in your district and in Michigan schools overall?

Addressing academic disparities requires targeted interventions such as culturally responsive teaching practices and increasing access to advanced coursework. We will have to meet Black students where they're at. Implementing mentorship programs can provide black students with role models and additional academic support. Additionally, hiring more black educators and providing professional development on equity and inclusion can create a more supportive environment for black students.

What are your thoughts on how to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion, income status, etc., feel safe and included in your district?

Ensuring that all students and families feel safe and included requires implementing comprehensive anti-discrimination policies and providing ongoing training for staff on cultural competency and inclusion. Establishing affinity groups and support networks, similar to those in place in Ann Arbor Public Schools, can provide safe spaces for students and families from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, ensuring that curricula and school activities reflect the diversity of the student body can foster a more inclusive environment.

What are your thoughts on how to recruit and retain staff, particularly staff of color, in your district with regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions?

Recruiting and retaining teachers requires offering competitive salaries and benefits, as well as creating a supportive work environment. Implementing mentorship programs for new teachers, providing ongoing professional development opportunities, and involving teachers in decision-making processes can improve retention. Additionally, advocating for increased funding for education at the state level can help ensure that teachers are compensated fairly.
