How would you engage and include parents, caregivers, community members and students in decision-making in your district around things like curriculum, budgeting and district policy?

To involve parents, caregivers, community members, and students in decision-making, I would establish open lines of communication through surveys, focus groups, and regular meetings. I’d also promote district transparency and actively seek feedback on important issues such as curriculum, budgeting, and district policies. By creating collaborative working groups that include diverse perspectives, I’d ensure that the community’s input is reflected in the decisions that shape our schools.

What are your thoughts on school discipline and the way it is exercised in your school district? What are your thoughts on restorative practices?

Effective school discipline should be fair, consistent, and focused on helping students learn from their mistakes. Our district should prioritize practices that address the root causes of behavior while maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment.

I strongly support restorative practices as a means to repair harm and build community. These practices encourage accountability and provide opportunities for students to reflect, reconcile, and reintegrate into the school environment, fostering a culture of respect and understanding.

What are your thoughts on how to improve student mental health

To improve student mental health, our district should adopt a comprehensive approach that includes increasing access to mental health professionals within schools, such as counselors and psychologists. Implementing regular mental health screenings and integrating mental health education into the curriculum can also raise awareness and reduce stigma. Creating a supportive school climate where students feel safe expressing their emotions is also essential.

Collaborating with local mental health organizations can provide additional resources and support for both students and families. Professional development for staff on recognizing and addressing mental health issues is crucial to ensure they can effectively support students. Involving students in creating mental health initiatives can empower them and provide valuable insights into their needs. By addressing mental health proactively and holistically, we can better support our students’ overall well-being and academic success.

What are your thoughts on ways to improve Black student achievement in your district and in Michigan schools overall?

Improving Black student achievement requires addressing both academic and systemic challenges. Schools should provide equitable access to resources, such as advanced coursework and technology, while integrating culturally relevant teaching into the curriculum. Mentorship programs, tutoring, and targeted support services are essential to bridge achievement gaps. Staff training on implicit bias and culturally responsive teaching can also help eliminate systemic barriers.

Parental and community engagement is key to creating a supportive network, and schools should collaborate with families and community organizations to encourage academic success. Regularly tracking achievement data ensures interventions are effective, fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students.

What are your thoughts on how to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion, income status, etc., feel safe and included in your district?

To ensure that all students and their families feel safe and included, our district must prioritize creating an environment that celebrates diversity and actively combats discrimination. This involves implementing inclusive policies, offering ongoing diversity and equity training for staff, and establishing clear protocols for addressing any incidents of bias or exclusion.

Engaging directly with students and families from marginalized communities is essential to understanding their needs and concerns and ensuring their voices are heard and reflected in district decisions. By fostering a respect and inclusion culture, we can ensure every student and family feels valued and supported.

What are your thoughts on how to recruit and retain staff, particularly staff of color, in your district with regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions?

Recruiting and retaining staff of color requires competitive pay, comprehensive benefits, and a supportive work environment that values diversity. Creating mentorship programs, offering professional development, and building an inclusive school culture can attract and retain diverse talent.
