How would you engage and include parents, caregivers, community members and students in decision-making in your district around things like curriculum, budgeting and district policy?

I will regularly hold public forums and town hall meetings to discuss upcoming decisions and gather feedback. I will actively involve students by creating student councils or focus groups that can provide insights from their perspective. I will explain my reasons for voting the way I did!

What are your thoughts on school discipline and the way it is exercised in your school district? What are your thoughts on restorative practices?

We require a shift in mindset and culture, focusing on understanding and supporting students rather than just punishing them. We recognize that students may sometimes act out, but how much effort do we truly invest in understanding the reasons behind their behavior and proactively providing the support they need?

What are your thoughts on how to improve student mental health

We need to focus on restoring and repairing our relationship with students, building a foundation of trust and understanding to support their growth and success.

What are your thoughts on ways to improve Black student achievement in your district and in Michigan schools overall?

Establishing mentoring programs and involving parents and the community can make a significant difference. Early intervention and data-driven decisions are crucial for addressing challenges and supporting student success.

What are your thoughts on how to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion, income status, etc., feel safe and included in your district?

to ensure that all students and their families feel safe and included, we ensure an inclusive and supportive environment through culturally responsive practices, equitable resources, and comprehensive anti-discrimination policies. Combine that with active engagement with families and communities, will help foster a welcoming atmosphere for everyone.

What are your thoughts on how to recruit and retain staff, particularly staff of color, in your district with regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions?

To recruit and retain top talent, our district needs to offer competitive pay, comprehensive benefits, and supportive working conditions. We should focus on creating an inclusive and positive work environment, provide professional development opportunities, and actively address any barriers that may impact staff satisfaction and retention.
