How would you engage and include parents, caregivers, community members and students in decision-making in your district around things like curriculum, budgeting and district policy?
I am currently on the TLC (Teaching and Learning Council) and Strategic Planning committees, both of which also include parents and community members. While there are many ways to engage with parents, caregivers, community members and students, I think that face to face collaboration is the best and would encourage people to get involved as much as possible.
What are your thoughts on school discipline and the way it is exercised in your school district? What are your thoughts on restorative practices?
I believe in restorative practices. As a district, we have embraced the practice by offering spaces and training for our staff to facilitate.
What are your thoughts on how to improve student mental health
For the hours that students are in the school, we need to provide safe spaces and foster a positive culture and do all that we can to remove the stigma of mental health issues. We have implemented Social-Emotional Learning programs and we need to ensure that they continue and grow.
What are your thoughts on ways to improve Black student achievement in your district and in Michigan schools overall?
I think curriculum should incorporate diverse perspectives. Textbooks and resources should include Black authors, historical figures and role models. Additionally, we need to ensure equitable funding and resources.
What are your thoughts on how to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion, income status, etc., feel safe and included in your district?
Policy and communication
What are your thoughts on how to recruit and retain staff, particularly staff of color, in your district with regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions?
