Brief Intro of Candidate

I am a 1992 alumna of MSU and both my children recently graduated from MSU. I was a Democratically elected Ingham County Commissioner from 2005-2016. I own a small fundraising consulting firm with four employees that works with non-profit organizations to raise funds. I currently serve on the UoM Health Sparrow Speciality Hospital, the Capital Area Michigan Works Workforce Development Board, the Capital Regional Community Foundation Board and I am the President of the Rotary Club of Lansing.

How would you engage and include parents, caregivers, community members and students in decision-making in your district around things like curriculum, budgeting and district policy?

I would engage students, faculty and staff by meeting with them to learn about the issues they care about and bring issues to the Board for consideration.

What are your thoughts on school discipline and the way it is exercised in your school district? What are your thoughts on restorative practices?

Restorative justice practices are an essential part of the healing process and a good alternative to suspension or expulsion. Student safety and education are priorities in any learning environment.

What are your thoughts on how to improve student mental health

I believe Michigan State University needs to offer more mental health services on campus for students, faculty and staff.

What are your thoughts on ways to improve Black student achievement in your district and in Michigan schools overall?

Offering programs to help students integrate into the university setting and ensuring resources, including free tutoring, are available if needed are vital for student success.

What are your thoughts on how to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion, income status, etc., feel safe and included in your district?

By giving them a voice, listening and addressing their concerns.

What are your thoughts on how to recruit and retain staff, particularly staff of color, in your district with regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions?

Have the administration report out on how many new hires are staff of color and hold them accountable if numbers show staff of color are not being added to the faculty and staff.
